Alternatives to Seclusion and Restraint of Special Needs Individuals

“Ukeru Intro” from Kim Sanders on Vimeo.

After discovering the realities of seclusion and restraint with our autistic daughter at school my wife an I are learning more about the realities of our schools and culture in how kids with special needs are being handled. We don’t disagree that something needs to be done, but there are alternatives that are safer and better for everyone. A recent podcast, LOMAH Special Needs Podcast (#39 – Restraint & Seclusion of Special Needs Individuals), that my wife an I listened gave very compelling alternatives.

Use our alternative physical techniques of blocking. If you can restrain someone you can block someone.

    A Nice Sunny Saturday Run

It was nice to get out just when the sun first came up for my Saturday run, and the temperature was just right too. It’s not too often I get to run in the daylight. There was a bit more people out at that time, than my normal 4-5am, so I had to switch sides…

When A Run Turns Into A Fight, With Yourself

This morning wasn’t hard because of the weather, the terrain, or my physical state, this morning my run was consumed with a battle of my emotions and an ugly part of me that rears it’s head every now and then. Unfortunately, I spent little time during my run in worship or prayer, most of it…
